Introduction
USD 260, Derby Public Schools, will continue its mission for all students to reach their full potential this school year with the implementation of the first set of action plans developed for its strategic plan. The Board of Education has taken the initiative to involve staff, students, parents, and community members in a process to help lay the foundation for the district’s future. The process began in January 2007 when 25 members of the school district and community came together for a three day strategic planning workshop. Team members developed statements concerning the districts mission, beliefs, objectives, parameters, and seven proactive strategies. All of these statements were reached with 100% consensus.
In March, additional staff, parents, and patrons developed action teams and became involved in the process. The action teams created specific, results-based action plans for each of the seven strategies developed by the strategic planning team. The seven strategies focus on recruitment and retention, curriculum and instruction, safety and security, technology, facilities, growth initiatives, and active student participation.
The action plans were presented to the strategic planning team in June and approved by the Board of Education on July 9, 2007. The Board also approved the mission, beliefs, objectives, parameters, and year one action plans at the July 9, 2007 meeting.
The strategic planning process is an on-going endeavor by the Board of Education, which started in 2002, to ensure a progressive education in a safe and supportive environment for the children of USD 260.
